Disney’s Lilo & Stitch (2002) was an animated film that opened our eyes (and hearts) to the scruffy and lovable Stitch—or ‘Experiment 626’. It’s gone on to influence pop culture in ways we would’ve never been able to predict upon first watch. For some, the film was our first exposure to Hawaiian culture too.
For 2025, the film gets a live-action adaptation. After having watched the recently released trailer, it’s pretty clear we’ll be boarding the nostalgia train.
Original in its approach, faithful to the animated film

For fans of the original animated film (and perhaps the series that followed), the trailer definitely reels you in with lots of fan service.
Some might say this is a cheap ploy at grabbing views, but we’re glad to see that creative ego put aside for something like this. After all, most of us were kids (or teens) when we first watched the original.

Seeing it all happen again in live action can be risky (CC: Sonic the Hedgehog), but it seems that the show-runners knew what they were doing this time.

The two-minute, 24-second trailer is packed with emotions, laughs, and plenty of action. It covers almost all bases, while also giving us a proper look at the cast, which includes Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Agudong as Nani, Billy Magnussen as Pleakley, and Zach Galifianakis as Jumba.
You’ll be glad to know that Chris Sanders, the original voice actor for Stitch, reprises his role for this live-action remake. If the trailer is anything to go by, Stitch will sound as authentic as ever.

This writer’s favourite bit of fan service (at least from what the trailer gives us) is that one dude who loses his snow cone. If we’re being nit-picky, the animated film actually shows him losing a scoop of ice cream. But hey, snow cones are probably more appropriate anyway.
Lilo & Stitch will open exclusively in cinemas nationwide on 22 May 2025.
