Flood Victims Raid Convenience Stores Out Of Hunger After 3 Days Without Food

Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam, one of the worst-hit areas of the flood, saw several of its convenience stores looted yesterday.

According to Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Baharudin Mat Taib, the stores that were looted were KK Mart, 7-Eleven, Mydin Mart and Jimat Supermarket at Section 15 Shah Alam.

The incident took place between 1pm-2pm on 20 December, 3 days after the flooding started.

The stores, that were also engulfed by the flood, were allegedly raided by flood victims from Sri Muda that were desperate for food and other essentials. Residents said that they had not received food aid since Friday and many were stranded on their roofs for days with their homes submerged in flood waters.

A Twitter user posted on their account saying that his uncle was stranded at Sri Muda for three days with no assistance. They had to resort to their own measures at rescuing their loved ones.

Baharudin said none of the store owners have lodged a report so far.

Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd managing director, Ameer Ali Mydin released a statement today addressing the issue.

“I do not support the act of stealing. However, in times of emergency, perhaps they had no other choice and were forced to do so to survive,” said Ameer.

Many netizens have voiced a similar view on this incident. Twitter users are defending the residents for their actions after news agency, Bernama reported the issue.

One person even Tweeted for authorities to not take action against those who looted as they were “not doing a crime. They’re trying to survive. (sic)”

As of now, Sri Muda is getting the help it needs to recover from this devastating flood. Many areas in Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and parts of Selangor are still submerged under flood waters with many victims left stranded.
