WATCH: Teenage Riot Girls Address Anti-Asian Racism & Smash The Patriarchy in ‘Racist, Sexist Boy’

By growling into the mic, strumming their guitars and pounding on drums, this teen punk band held up the middle finger to racism and sexism at a live performance at the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) recently.

Youthful anarchy filled the room as The Linda Lindas performed 6 of their original songs as well as 2 covers in celebration of Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

The quartet displays infectious energy as they sing their progressive lyrics to the pulse of some of the finest punk instrumentals seen in young musicians.

The members, Mila, 10; Eloise, 13; Lucia, 14; and Bela, 16, are seen decked out in their plaid skirts and knee-high socks as they belt about the pandemic, cats, discovering individuality and of course – the cream of the crop – racism and sexism in schools.

As if their shouting in a library wasn’t enough to prove their rebellion, the girls’ lyrics to their now viral hit, ‘Racist, Sexist Boy’ kicks a hole in the wall of racial and misogynistic prejudice as they call out, “Poser! Blockhead! Riffraff! Jerkface!”

Inspired by their drummer’s actual encounter with a racist, sexist boy who told her that “his dad told him to stay away from Chinese people”, the song has since garnered unanimous praise online and even captured the attention of Rage Against The Machine’s lead Tom Morello, who called the single ‘The Song of the Day’.

Charismatic and empowering, The Linda Lindas have catapulted themselves into the spotlight and proven that punk is not just a genre of music, but a demonstration against all oppression no matter where it happens.
