Astro & TM Rumoured To Announce Partnership With Disney+ For Malaysian Market
Since Disney pulled out their TV channels in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong, including Malaysia, there have been talks that Disney+ will be available here very soon.
Besides setting up its own streaming platform, it is rumoured that Disney+ will be partnering with platforms like Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd and Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM), The Edge reported.
According to The Edge, when asked whether TM is going to partner with Disney for its streaming service, the group said:
“We applaud Disney’s decision to move into the OTT (over-the-top) space. We live in a time that high quality broadband has enabled us to access a wide, rich, universe of entertainment that is ever-expanding.
“As the nation’s primary provider of home broadband, Unifi will ensure that all our customers will continue to enjoy quality content on Unifi TV that meets their entertainment needs,” TM told The Edge via text.
When contacted by The Edge, Astro simply said: “Please wait for (the) official announcement”. Several sources from the industry have said that Astro is working towards a partnership with Disney+ to have its streaming content on its platform.
For now, Astro already has some content from streaming services on its platform, namely HBO Go and China’s iQIYI.
CNA reported last week that The Walt Disney Company said it is “consolidating its Media Networks business primarily in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong”, as part of the company’s “global effort to pivot towards a direct-to-consumer model and grow” its streaming services.
Disney+ was launch in November 2019 and has more than 100 million subscribers on its streaming platform with service in 59 countries around the world including North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Latin America.
