2020 Merdeka Parade Cancelled to Keep The Rakyat Safe
Last year, our annual National Day parade saw more than 100,000 gather at Dataran Putrajaya to celebrate Merdeka and enjoy the procession, cultural performances, military demonstration and intricate floats among other things. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will have to celebrate Merdeka a little bit differently this year…
According to The Star, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob confirmed that our 63rd National Day celebration parade will not be held but side programmes are likely to go on with standard operating procedures (SOP) in place.
The decision was made to keep the rakyat safe as Malaysia is still recovering from the pandemic.
The Senior Minister also stated that the Multimedia and Communications Minister would announce other programmes to be held in conjunction with Merdeka celebrations, as well as the SOP that must be followed. The side celebrations on 31 August includes ‘flying the Jalur Gemilang’ campaign.
“For now, we have not scheduled for a Merdeka parade. This event involves large crowds, by the thousands… Social distancing, especially among the crowd will be hard to practise. So far, no permission has been given for big celebrations or parades,” he said yesterday.
