Gunman Kills 16, Sets Several Houses Ablaze in Canada’s Worst Mass Shooting in Modern Times

A gunman has killed 16 people, including a police officer after a 12-hour shooting rampage across Nova Scotia, Canada in the worst act of mass murder the country has seen in modern times, as reported by The Guardian.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said several bodies were found scattered across multiple crime scenes in various areas, and several houses were set on fire during a rampage that stretched from Saturday to Sunday. Authorities said the suspect disguised as law enforcement and drove a car to resemble a white RCMP vehicle.

Chris Leather, chief superintendent of the Nova Scotia RCMP said the gunman, identified as 51-year old Gabriel Wortman is dead after a standoff with one of the officers.

One of the victims was RCMP officer Heidi Stevenson, a 23-year old veteran while another officer was injured while pursuing the suspect, Leather told reporters.

Police said they had no idea what Wortman’s motivation might be as there was no apparent link between him and the victims.

“Today is a devastating day for Nova Scotia and it will remain etched in the minds of many for years to come,” RCMP commanding officer Lee Bergman said.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement, saying he was saddened by the senseless violence that took place in the Atlantic province:

“Our hearts go out to the people who have lost loved ones, and to the RCMP family mourning a fallen officer. I also hope for a full recovery for the people who were injured, including one RCMP member who is in hospital being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.”
