Cinema’s Cutest Bromance, Simon Pegg & Nick Frost Hit the Small Screen with New TV Show

Your ambiguously gay duo is back! From fighting zombies and corrupt cops in Shaun of The Dead and Hot Fuzz to ghost hunting in Amazon’s new show, Truth Seekers, the gut-twistingly hilarious duo of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg will produce and star in the series.

This new show, set to release somewhere around 2020, will portray Frost as Gus, who makes up half of the ghost-hunting couple, and his encounters with the paranormal sightings across the U.K. Implementing the wonders of the Internet into their show, Gus and his partner share their creepy adventures in haunted churches, underground bunkers and abandoned hospitals on an online channel. So, think Shane and Ryan from Buzzfeed Unsolved but funnier… and British.

Once their supernatural experiences become more frequent and cross their threshold of acceptance, the pair realise that their adventures are turning into terrifying and grave expeditions that could alter the fabric of the entire human race.

Are you as excited as I am?

So far, Pegg’s role in the movie is to be determined. When asked to comment on their new endeavour into the small screen, Pegg told Variety,

“It’ll start as a very parochial idea, a very small business venture for these people, but it will expand as the series goes on to be something far more global. It’s a language everyone understands, the mystery of the unknown. Shaun of the Dead was a very parochial story set in North London and somehow it managed to get this global reach because everyone understands the language of zombie movies.”

In the meantime, to ail our Frost and Pegg withdrawals, let’s binge some of their previous iconic movies. Here is my ranked list of the bromance’s best movies.

5. Ice Age: Continental Drift

I bet y’all didn’t know that both Frost and Pegg played supporting roles in the beloved Ice Age saga, didn’t you? Well… if you did, just pretend you didn’t to make me feel better.

I’ve always been a massive fan of the Ice Age movies and this particular film is no exception despite it’s close to abysmal reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (critics aren’t always right smh). Ice Age: Continental Drift tells the tale of the three main characters, Manny, Sid and Diego, and their pursuit to return home after the continents have been split apart. Along the way, they meet Pegg’s character, Buck, an eccentric weasel who helps the triplet find their lost friends and family whilst involving them in some hilarious hijinks. At the climax of the film, the main characters then encounter Flynn, a dumber-than-life walrus who is a part of a rag-tag pirate crew set in their ways to stop the protagonists from returning home.

Granted, this animated movie, albeit wonderful fun, does not portray the Frost-Pegg bromance in any light at all. In fact, most people aren’t even aware these two were in the same film. However, I still suggest watching Ice Age: Continental Drift just for the unadulterated bliss of hearing their voices as quirky pre-historic creatures.

Watchability: I haven’t seen this movie since it came out but I regard the time I did as a fond memory.

Bromance rating: ⭐️. The 1 star comes from knowing they’re even in the same movie.

4. Paul

In light of the recent Area 51 raid, Paul is about an alien who escapes captivity and meets two earthlings, played by Frost and Pegg, who innocently pick-him up and harbour him in their RV. When the government officials begin their pursuit for the missing alien, Frost and Pegg must endanger their lives to save Paul, whom they have begun to have a fondness for.

A raunchy comedy (that has a surprisingly heartfelt ending) filled to the brim with heavyweight comedians such as Kristen Wiig, Jason Bateman, Bill Hader and Seth Rogen (as the titular character), Paul is a great watch especially with your space-obsessed friends. This movie is a great excuse to munch on some special brownies, gab about alien conspiracy theories and giggle like Seth Rogen at the characters’ hilarious antics.

Watchability: I love putting this movie on when I’m surrounded by a bunch of good friends who just wanna chill and laugh at an alien mooning unsuspecting humans.

Bromance: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ‘cos not only do you get a Frost-Pegg bromance, but you get a Frost-Pegg-Rogen threesome too.

3. The World’s End

The end to the acclaimed Cornetto Trilogy, The World’s End is a sweet yet action-packed film detailing the reunion of 5 friends who are struggling to relive their glory days in their desolate hometown. Gary King, former It-boy played by Pegg, invites his 4 closest high school friends to attempt their epic pub-crawl from the olden days. His friends, played by Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan, are all reluctant to join in after having moved on with their lives but decide to push through after hearing news of King’s mother’s death.

If you haven’t seen this movie, I won’t spoil the twist but just know, you should be prepared for a whole lot of action, sci-fi and adorable bromance moments. The only gripe I have about this movie is the ending, which in my opinion, comes out of left field and feels odd considering the rest of the film. But I won’t let that deter you. Watch it and see for yourself.

Watchability: I’ve rewatched this movie a total of 3 times which is a lot for someone who likes watching new movies. It fills me up with a sense of kindred spirit since I’m a loner with no friends who longs for companionship. Sorry, that took a dark turn…

Bromance: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. The Frost-Pegg bromance takes a while to build to a boil but once it does, you can poach an egg in that heat. Speaking of heat…

2. Hot Fuzz

Pegg plays a London constable, Nicholas Angel, who is sent to the small village of Sandford after being too good at his job. Deemed as being obsessed with police work, Angel is an introvert who is incapable of having fun. Enter goofy and endearing Frost who plays PC Danny Butterman whom he meets after booking him for public intoxication and drunk driving. After discovering that Butterman is actually the inspector’s son, Pegg is forced to work closely with Frost on numerous petty crimes.

Since Angel is a virtuoso at his work, he begins to find unsettling patterns in the crimes that occur within Sandford. Soon, he is challenged when he is forced to choose between his new, dear friend or his treasured job.

Watchability: I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this movie. It’s the kind of action-packed and hilarious flick that you can rewatch over and over again without tiring. Truly one of the best films of all time.

Bromance:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Pegg wins Frost a toy-monkey! And they eat cake and Cornetto ice-creams together while riding around in a police car. What more could you want?

1. Shaun of The Dead

It’s only fair that my number 1 pick is the first movie I’ve ever seen with both Frost and Pegg. I don’t think this movie needs any introduction since it’s regarded as one of the most famous movies in pop culture but just in case you’re a pleb that hasn’t seen it, here’s the scoop.

Pegg plays the titular Shaun who is a loser with a mundane job and a bored girlfriend. The bane of his life (re: loser best friend) Ed, portrayed by Frost, is constantly pulling him down and jeopardising his relationship with his girlfriend, Liz. After an unpredictably sudden break-up, Shaun has decided to turn over a new leaf in hopes of wooing Liz again but his plan soon falters when a zombie outbreak threatens to harm Shaun and those close to him. Shaun must now step-up to the plate and grow up in order to save his loved ones from danger.

Watchability: Every day. I can watch this every single day.

Bromance:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Shaun and Ed are at constant odds with each other but the real-life bond between Frost and Pegg allows a sense of warmth and camaraderie to shine through amidst the quarrelling, blood and pints. Plus, that ending was totally unexpected yet absolutely allowed!
