LISTEN: The Weeknd Brings Back His Dark-Side in ‘My Dear Melancholy’
It looks like someone is spilling some tea on his new EP that was dropped surprisingly last night. It has only been about a year and a half since The Weeknd last release of his full-length album Starboy, and already he’s hitting fans with another round of new music.
The Weeknd a.k.a Abel Tesfaye, 27, has long been a favourite here at JUICE and My Dear Melancholy seals the deal. The 6-track effort is executive produced by the Weeknd and Frank Dukes. It includes two collaborations with Gesaffelstein, as well as production by Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, Skrillex, Mike WiLL Made-It, Daheala, Cirkut, and Marz.
According to Billboard, close sources said that “Abel is taking it back to his roots,” and the gloomy cover art suggests that the “roots” he’s returning to is the dark, nocturnal R&B vibe from the singer’s debut mixtape, ‘House of Balloons’. With this EP, he ditched his Starboy sound and dips back into his somber pill-poppin’ persona.
Fans are already dissecting the EP as they try to figure out what tracks are about his ex, Selena Gomez – who allegedly left him for Justin Bieber. The Weeknd bares it all on the song ‘Call Out My Name’ when he sings softly, “We found each other/ I helped you out of a broken place/ You gave me comfort/ But falling for you was my mistake”.
Let’s be real, who else could that be about? He continued with the lyrics “I want you to stay even though you don’t want me” in the chorus.
So before you dive into My Dear Melancholy, just know that even the strongest of people will shed a tear. Make sure you keep you phone far away or not you’ll feel either miss, love or hatred towards your ex. We’ve warned yah..
