102 Year Old Italian Woman Survives Coronavirus
Italica Grondona, a 102-year-old woman from Genoa, Italy miraculously survived the deadly Coronavirus disease after contracting it and spending over 20 days in hospital to get treated. Her story is particularly noteworthy as the elderly (ages 65 and above) are among the most vulnerable to suffer from getting the virus according to the CDC.
Bernama reported that the doctor who treated Grondona, Vera Sicbaldi, dubbed the centenarian “Highlander – The Immortal,” and followed up by saying how “Italica represents a hope for all the elderly facing this pandemic.” What’s more astonishing is the fact that doctors claimed to have done “very little” and suggested that Grondona mainly “recovered on her own”.
Moreover, Italy ranks as the country with the highest total deaths in the world despite the USA having more cases and the disease itself originating from Wuhan, China. Bernama also noted that Italy’s National Health Institute has said “the average age of those who have tested positive for coronavirus and subsequently died in Italy is 78.”
Grondona was hospitalised for supposed mild heart failure at the beginning of March, after which doctors discovered her to show mild symptoms of Covid-19. They took serological samples from Grondona and believed that she might possibly have lived through another epidemic which plagued the early 20th century, the ‘Spanish flu’ as she was born in 1917 (the epidemic took place from 1918-1919).
Needless to say, the doctors assigned to Grondona were so impressed with her case that they decided to study it deeper. In regards to Grondona herself, she was discharged from the hospital on the 26th of March and is currently residing in a care home. Based on these statistics alone, it’s no mystery as to why doctors would bestow this 102 year old with the title of ‘The Immortal’.
