Putting An End To The Debate: James Cameron Reveals Why Jack Had To Die In The “Titanic”
The iconic film, Titanic premiered 25 years ago. Since then, there has been an on-going debate as to whether or not Jack should have survived.
Many would argue that Jack (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) could have survived together only if they made the effort to fit the both of them on the wooden door.
On the Discovery Channel show, Mythbusters, they decided to test that theory by using an exact replica of the door from the movie. In the end, they made it work by tying one of their life jackets – which would be Rose’s in the film – to the bottom of the door to reinforce the buoyancy which worked.
Even Neil deGrasse Tyson, a famous American astrophysicist, spoke up about the matter. deGrasse Tyson revealed in an interview that his problem was with Jack’s half-hearted attempt to get on the door in the first place.
Actress Keke Palmer argued the same thing. Jack should have tried harder to fit the both of them on the wooden door instead of giving up right away.
However, the director of the film, James Cameron, explains in the new Titanic documentary why Jack had to die.
According to Cameron, in order to establish whether Rose and Jack could have been a little more inventive in their survival technique, Cameron claimed he had worked with stunt divers and a hypothermia expert.
“We tested to see whether they could have survived through a variety of methods and the answer was, there was no way they both could have survived. Only one could survive,” Cameron said.
Cameron revealed that more information regarding the findings will be in the upcoming documentary.
The new Titanic documentary will air on National Geographic in February, just in time for the Titanic’s 25th anniversary re-release.
