What Went Down: Global Sound System ’13 @ Welcome Centre, Sepang International Circuit
Global Sound System @ Welcome Centre, Sepang International Circuit
Not everyone wants to get up close and personal with their favourite DJs though, sometimes you just want to get smashed and trashed to their mixes, and that’s exactly what went down at Global Sound System. The festival kicked off on a heavy house note, with local heroes Mr. Nasty & GuruGuru and Terence C revving up the party engines to full gear despite being openers. After a short Maghrib prayers break, the party was continued by Italo-dance house maestro Alex Kenji. Some might not have heard of him, but that night the Japanophile-named DJ-producer played a set that included his own hit with Nadia Ali and The Starkillers ‘Pressure’ to the crowd’s euphoria, proving why he is the current prophet of house.
How could it not be a house-centric first half when it was all leading up to the 2nd wave of pioneer himself, Felix Da Housecat? The legend’s set list was an education in house and techno bangers, EDM might have only exploded in the States recently, but real heads know Felix had been instrumental in shaping the scene today. The conference’s guest speaker and Ibiza staple, Judge Jules, played next, continuing the string of legendary acts. Disregarding the specificity of the acts that preceded him, Jules played anything and everything with a cohesion than only an experienced party thrower can pull off, simply genius.
Despite being a festival fledgling compared to Jules, Shogun proved his mettle regardless of his relative freshman status compared to the legends playing that night. The American-Taiwanese DJ entranced the crowd with tunes that you’d expect off Armin van Buuren’s radio show, in fact, he was the first Asian deckmeister to be signed by Armada. Working extra hard to show what he was made off, we were more than convinced by his cred as an international-level DJ.
Fittingly, the last legend to perform closed the night. The Grammy-nominated music producer, platinum-selling artist, film composer and technologist, BT, didn’t let his equipment’s technical issue affect the show. After quickly remedying the situation, he spared no time wasted and went straight to playing conductor to the orchestra of ravers fist-pumping like a wave of neon-glowed body mass. Being known more as a producer – and not fond of being labelled as a DJ himself – BT’s mix included a lot of his own productions, which was to the preference of everyone, of course. The din of cheers once BT’s ‘This Must Be The Love’ played was phenomenal – a perfect end to a more intimate dance festival.
