WATCH: 2NE1 Breaks The Internet With A Surprise Reunion Performance At Coachella
Legendary K-Pop band 2NE1 said Annyeong to us back in 2016 when they announced their official disbandment.
K-netz (Korean netizens, or Korean culture enthusiasts) were heartbroken by the news.
Minzy was the first member to leave the group. The remaining three decided to push on as a trio, but reports claimed that YG Entertainment was said to have completely voided its relationship with 2NE1 because the company was unable to “manage” one of the group’s members.
Despite this, they have frequently stated their desire to reconnect and record new music together in the future. The last time all four members performed as a group was at the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) in 2015, so their surprising reunion is their first in nearly six years.
However, fans were in for a treat yesterday when the K-pop group’s first live performance since 2015 took place at the Californian event as part of the 88rising takeover.
The four-piece girl group comprising of Park Bom, CL, Dara and Minzy performed their hit ‘I Am The Best’ for the show.
K-netz quickly swarmed social media platforms and news sites, especially Twitter, Instagram and Soompi to share clips and opinions, stunned by the performance. Some even said they were moved to tears, “happy and sad at the same time”, overjoyed by the girls’ reunion but upset that they could not witness it.
Initially, 88rising only included CL in their official line up, but speculations broke out they 88rising posted about the show on Weibo referring to the act as “CL and 2NE1″ rather than “CL of 2NE1”
After the show, CL posted images on Instagram, revealing that she was responsible for the surprise.
A translation of the caption by Allkpop reads, “After I got invited to Coachella, I really wanted to invite the members too because I wanted to see us reunite on our terms before it’s too late.
“I wanted to relay my gratefulness to everyone who has been supporting and loving 2NE1 for the past 13 years through this stage performance.
“For that very reason, today was the most important and meaningful day for me.
“I hope you could relive the past emotions that you felt through us, thanks to this moment today.”
Currently, 2NE1 and Blackpink are the only K-Pop girl groups to have ever performed at Coachella. Blackpink is also managed by YG Entertainment.
Several other popular icons including Harry Styles, Måneskin and The Weeknd were also present at the highly-anticipated music festival.
