VIDEO: Sumo Chair by Benwu Studio
Benwu Studios consist of a sick bunch of designers. Based both in London and New York City, the two designers works well in product, furniture, and spatial design. With their characteristic designs that have left traces in homes, galleries, and boutiques around the world, it’s no doubt that something as simple as a chair can be crafted in an intrinsically unique way that borders on art utilising their craftsmanship and know-how of joinery — which began with research into about 120 different kinds of mortise and tenon joints. Deciding ultimately on 3 kinds of joints to complete the whole chair structure where each part can lock one after another to become a self-locked shape. Easily assembled without the use of any glue or hardware, the aesthetic of the chair resembles a squatting sumo wrestler which gives the chair an extra endurance.
