With the continuous lockdown happening in Malaysia, everyone has been missing their family and friends, and some have taken their desperation up a notch… like this guy in Penang.

According to NST, a 28-year-old man, who failed to obtain approval for inter-district travel to meet a friend, resorted to jumping into the sea near Tanjung City Marina here to swim across to Seberang Prai. However, he gave up mid-way as he was tired and was rescued by Penang Port Sdn Bhd workers.

Earlier today (15 July), video footage and images of the incident went viral on social media.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong said an investigation revealed the incident happened about 6pm on Monday (12 July).

“Based on the interview conducted, the man said he was determined to swim to Seberang Perai because he wanted to meet his friend after failing to get an inter-district permit from the police.

“No identity document was found on the man, instead he only stated personal details like his name and identity card number orally. Further investigation found that the man was from Bayan Lepas, Penang and did not have a job,” Soffian said.

Soffian also explained that the man’s permit was not granted as he could not provide a valid reason for the travel.

Since then, the man has been taken to the Penang Hospital for treatment after checks by doctor found that he broke his right hand while swimming.

“Further investigation will be carried out once the man is discharged from hospital,” Soffian added.
