Legendary Musician Tina Turner Dies at 83, Leaving a Lasting Musical Legacy
The death of the unrivalled Tina Turner, a trailblazing rock’n’roll artist who later gained enormous success as a pop icon in the 1980s, is being mourned throughout the world today.
An outpouring of tributes are flooding social media platforms, from fellow musicians to fans of all ages, highlighting the profound impact she had on people’s lives.
After a protracted illness, Tina Turner’s incredible journey came to its end at the age of 83. She struggled with her health in recent years, receiving a diagnosis of intestinal cancer in 2016 and subsequently undergoing a kidney transplant in 2017.
She passed away in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.
Tina Turner’s path to fame was nothing short of extraordinary. She was born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, in Nutbush, Tennessee. Tina Turner began her career as a backup vocalist but quickly attracted the fancy of renowned musician Ike Turner, and the two went on to become the successful married couple and musical duo, “Ike & Tina Turner.”
During the 1960s and 1970s, their explosive performances and hits like “Proud Mary” and “River Deep – Mountain High” catapulted them to international stardom. Things weren’t always a bed of roses, though, and Tina Turner finally mustered the resolve to leave her turbulent marriage and start over after suffering years of abuse. She explained that she realised the marriage was “doomed the day he figured out I was going to be his moneymaker”.
She then established a successful solo career with unyielding perseverance and untapped talent, overcoming the odds and exceeding all expectations. She took home numerous Grammy Awards and made a name for herself in the music industry due to to the international success of her album Private Dancer in 1984.
