If idealism is mainly a folly of youth, then it’s a sad thing today that so many young people feel defeated even before they start making a change. But it’s not impossible for us young folks to translate our compassion into action, especially for the youth who are deemed “too woke” for their own good.

You could rant about mad facts on Twitter the whole day and it’ll only convert a few people (if any), so instead of being another keyboard warrior, let’s channel that energy to something more tangible besides feeding trolls.

If you have an issue you would like to address, but feel powerless or think your words will be ignored, then this is for you! Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Boot Camp 2020 is calling all aspiring leaders to advocate for causes that affect their communities in hopes of encouraging new ways to catalyse change.

Biji-Biji Initiative, its education arm – Me.reka, and the U.S. Embassy in KL are partnering again on a series of YSEALI Boot Camps that aim to equip the next generation of Malaysians with the tools to build a brighter future. This boot camp will harness passionate participants who are ready to advocate the pressing issues faced by young Malaysians.

The 9-month initiative aims to empower a community of young leaders with the skills, expertise, and resources to become effective civic participants in our country. It will focus on civic engagement and empower you to take your voice from the community stage to national and global platforms.

“Our community’s greatest assets are our informed, engaged and enlightened citizens. Accordingly, our two social enterprises and the Embassy believe the youth of Malaysia are well placed to bring positive change within their communities,” said Gurpreet Singh Dhillon, Biji Biji Partner and Me.reka CEO.

An on-the-ground team will lead half-day boot camps in eight states – Terengganu, Pahang, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Selangor, Kelantan, Penang – with the goal of sparking national civic engagement.

A limited number of community members will be chosen for the first phase of the boot camps and will serve as a tool to identify the brightest leaders throughout the country. So, if you feel like creating a movement and bringing change to this world – you know what to do…
