The Story Behind ‘Nimrods’, Green Day’s New Film Inspired by Their Early Years

After years of music biopics chronicling the lives of legendary artists, Green Day is taking a different approach.

Rather than retelling the band’s rise to fame, Nimrods draws inspiration from their early touring years, when Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool were crammed into vans, sleeping on strangers’ floors, and playing small venues long before Dookie turned them into global stars.

Originally announced as New Years Rev, the comedy follows three teenage friends who mistakenly believe they’ve landed an opening slot for a Green Day New Year’s Eve show. Convinced it’s their big break, they set off on a road trip fuelled by ambition, optimism, and a healthy dose of teenage overconfidence.

A fictional story with real-life roots

While Nimrods isn’t a Green Day biopic, the film is inspired by the band’s formative years in the East Bay punk scene. Before becoming one of the biggest punk rock bands in the world, Green Day spent years touring independently, playing DIY venues, clubs, and community halls across the US.

According to the band, those early experiences helped shape the story’s premise, capturing the uncertainty, camaraderie, and spontaneity that came with life on the road before success arrived.

Green Day is involved behind the scenes

The film stars Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust as the fictional trio, alongside Mckenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, and Sean Gunn.

Green Day serves as producers on the project and will also appear as themselves. Director Lee Kirk reunites with Billie Joe Armstrong after previously directing him in Ordinary World.

Rather than recreating Green Day’s career beat for beat, Nimrods uses the band’s early experiences as a backdrop for an original coming-of-age story about chasing the dream of making it in music.

Nimrods is slated to open in US cinemas on 14 August 2026.
