The age of festivals is upon us. Future Sound Asia (FSA), more commonly associated with EDM events, is bringing a homebrewed festival this August; Good Vibes Festival (not to be mistaken for that Oz fest). With more focus on bands – ala a certain fest across the causeway – FSA is looking to tap into an urban market that doesn’t necessarily just want to find Molly at a rave. In fact, Good Vibes is an all ages festival supported by Ministry of Tourism and Culture and Malaysia Major Events, a division of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB).
Don’t mistake this for a G-rated family-friendly event with a lineup catered to the masses – Good Vibes is headlined by rock icons of the Generation-Y eras; alt rock pioneers The Smashing Pumpkins, the template originators of every consequent indie rock bands, Modest Mouse, Northern Ireland’s rockgods Ash, and modern drums-guitar heroes Japandroids. And no, these guys didn’t just happen to be touring, FSA impressively managed to rope them in for a Malaysia-exclusive performance at – where else can you hold an outdoor event? – Sepang.
Representing Asia as a whole, the festival will also feature Bangkok’s party and bullsh!t experts Dudesweet along with Singapore’s own equivalent Poptart. Indonesia’s DJ-producer and Agrikulture’s keyboardist, Dipha Barus, will spin as well. Because it won’t be a homegrown event without Malaysia’s own representatives, joining them are local acts familiar to every KLite who has ever picked up a copy of JUICE; Pastel Lite, The Impatient Sisters, They Will Kill Us All, Twilight Actiongirl, The Deer Society, Goldfish, Liyana Fizi, Kyoto Protocol, Monoloque, Tenderfist, Pitahati, Pesawat, and OJ Law.
All these acts will be separated by 3 colour-coded stages; Blue, Green, and Red. The first (Blue) lulls you with the nonchalantly cool electronic of Pastel Lite before moving to the melancholic acoustics of The Impatient Sisters, and like a temperamental playlist, the stage switches gear to the rollicking indie riffs of They Will Kill Us All and Japandroids come sundown. Roping in seniors Twilight Actiongirl and freshfaced The Deer Society, the second stage (Green) encapsulates KL’s affinity for alternative club nights. Finally the main stage (Red) is home to the pulse of Good Vibes – on the local front, expect rising rockstars Kyoto Protocol along with the complex sounds of Monoloque, which then will culminate with headliners Modest Mouse and The Smashing Pumpkins.
Good Vibes encompasses pop culture beyond just music. Turning Sepang Go Kart Circuit into a pop landscape, punters can expect art installations, fashion exhibits, and a food village. Online fashion portal Tongue In Chic, together with boutique Chic Yamada, will represent the fest’s fashion side with Chic Vibes. Despite the logic behind wanting to look good under the blazing hot sun, Chic Vibes houses a beauty bar complete with pampering services. Other than that, they are also set to debut designs by 5 local and 5 regional fashion labels.
Meanwhile, Nini Ramlan is in charge of curating the art installations, and the food village, named GoodBites, promises to include all the favourite local culinary artisans and entrepreneurs.
