She’s not a pontianak. Not a langsuir. But somehow, she’s burned into every student’s brain with just one haunting question: “Dik, nak karipap tak dik?” (Hey kid, want a curry puff?)

If you’ve ever stayed in a dorm, lived in a student house, or studied at a Malaysian uni, chances are you’ve heard of her. The moment you masuk asrama or step into campus life, someone—usually a senior—will hit you with this bizarre tale.

Known as Hantu Mak Cik Karipap, she’s not your typical ghost. No white dress, no flying hair. Instead, she turns up at your window around midnight with a terrifying face and a tray of karipap.

She doesn’t scream, she doesn’t float… She just wants to know if you’d like a snack.

According to a video by ML Studios, this ghost appears when students are up late studying. She lurks at the window, creepy and persistent, trying to sell karipap in the middle of the night. Some say she’s the spirit of someone who used to live there, stuck because of unfinished business. Others think the whole story was invented by lazy students trying to scare their studious friends into going to bed.

The most famous version of the story goes like this: a group of seniors told a junior to go buy karipap from the third floor of Block D. The thing is—Block D didn’t exist. It was all a prank. But the junior actually came back… holding karipap. He told them he met a mak cik there who gave him the curry puffs and told him to pass on a message:

“Stop bullying the juniors.”

That’s when it stopped being funny.

Even before TikTok and X (Twitter) threads, this story was already “viral” on old forums like Cari and Lowyat. People would share stories of hearing a faint voice outside their window at night, softly asking if they wanted karipap. Some peeked. Some hid. It sounded silly, but felt just real enough to make your skin crawl.

These days, it’s basically student folklore. Every new batch hears it. Whether it’s during orientation, late-night lepak sessions, or during a blackout, someone’s bound to bring it up. The more ridiculous the version, the better it sticks. And whether or not you’ve experienced it, everyone knows the name.

But why does she only show up at night? What’s really inside those karipap? No one knows—and no one really wants to.

Even now, Hantu Mak Cik Karipap remains one of Malaysia’s strangest, most iconic urban legends. Whether it’s real or just a long-running prank, one thing’s for sure: She’s made generations of students feel just a little uneasy about staying up too late.

So next time someone asks, “Nak karipap?” don’t be surprised if people get quiet… or start nervously laughing.
