The Filters Return With ‘krash’, A Math Rock Tribute To Survival

Malaysian math rock outfit The Filters are set to release their new single, ‘krash’, today, 24 July, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the 2022 NME-nominated Best New Act.

Since earning the nomination, the band has steadily built a reputation as one of Malaysia’s most exciting math rock acts, touring extensively across the country and internationally. Their latest release, however, carries a deeply personal weight.

The Filters took a short hiatus after bassist Reuben Ravi was involved in a serious accident last November, suffering severe abdominal injuries that left him unable to perform during his recovery.

While Reuben was recuperating, the remaining members organised a fundraising show and began writing ‘krash’.

Initially conceived as a trio composition, the jazz and math rock fusion piece was written in response to the accident and the experience of watching their bandmate recover.

Following Reuben’s return, the song was completed as a full-band composition.

Across its four-minute runtime, ‘krash’ moves through shifting moods and styles, with each section reflecting a different member’s perspective on the experience.

Moody, contemplative jazz rhythms give way to aggressive, pounding riffs, creating a sonic journey that balances tragedy with triumph.

More than simply a song about an accident, ‘krash’ becomes a document of the period that followed, capturing the uncertainty, fear, and eventual resilience of a band forced to temporarily confront life away from the stage.

Produced by Iain Chan Ziyan and Ian Francis Khoo, the track was arranged by Khoo, Aiman Shakirin, Reuben Ravi, and Chan Ziyan. Chan Ziyan also handled the recording, mixing, and mastering, while Khoo is credited as the composer.

With their second full-length album slated for release in Q4, ‘krash’ serves as the first glimpse into The Filters’ next era and the band’s comeback after a difficult period.
