The latest enterprise of the rampantly successful Big Group – responsible for an impressive list of eateries around KL – Tate’s recent opening at the Intermark Hotel is the group’s first foray into nightlife. But that’s not Tate’s only first; it is the first bar to be opened in Malaysia modelled upon the notorious speakeasy model. Conceptualized during the Prohibition in the United States, speakeasy bars were places for discretion and debauchery. And Tate is no different. With high-end intimate décor, featuring rustic sofas, rugs, and even a suit of armour to great you at the (hidden) entrance, Tate is an establishment outfitted for both business and pleasure. If you seek a crazy night complete with banging beats, fist pumping bros, and scantly clad gals, you are looking in the wrong place. Rather, Tate is the choice venue for those who wish to lay low and escape the hustle and bustle of the typical chaos that is KL nightlife. Steer clear if you are subject to a limited budget, as sophistication and secrecy come at a price.
