Kick Off Tamil New Year With These Long-Anticipated Kollywood Blockbusters Starring Suriya, Vijay & More!
Tamil New Year, known as Puthandu, marks the first of the Tamil month Chithirai; bringing about temple ceremonies, open houses, and lots of feasting among other activities.
This year, Tamil cinema has gifted us with film after film of endless romance, comedy, drama and action. Let’s talk about these movies featuring our favourite heroes to set the mood.
1. Beast
This greatly anticipated action-comedy film, released just yesterday, is already sending fans into a frenzy – sharing opinions, photos and even spoilers online. With Superstar Vijay front and centre, alongside pioneer stars like Selvaraghavan and Yogi Babu, you can expect nothing less than another hit.
The plot portrays a former RAW agent, played by Vijay, who attempts to rescue hostages from a terrorist mall-hijacking incident in order to free their leader. It’s directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, with Anirudh Ravichander working his usual magic on the soundtrack.
The movie is currently screening at cinemas such as GSC Nu Sentral and LFS Pawagam Coliseum.
2. Etharkkum Thunindhavan
Suriya, one of the highest-paid Tamil actors, stars in this gory thriller as a lawyer aiming to retrieve justice for a group of young women who are sexually exploited and abused by a notorious criminal web led by a minister’s son.
The title itself directly translates to “daredevil for anything”, perfectly shadowing what viewers can expect to witness.
A review from Times of India read, “The film is aware about the greyness of vigilantism and extra-judicial killings. It shows us Kannabiran using the judicial route to get justice and only when all doors are closed does he take up the law in his own hands. We even get a line with Kannabiran stating that he knows the value of a life.”
It’s currently streaming on Netflix!
3. Hey! Sinamika
This messy, romantic, frivolous movie was released last month. The title pays tribute to the popular Tamil film O Kadhal Kanmani, and the entire plot follows suit to the romantic flair shown in the Mani Ratnam film.
With a star-studded cast, including the pride of Kerala, Dulquer Salmaan, working with Aditi Rao Hydari and Kajal Aggarwal, it’s a classic love triangle trope – a weather scientist falls in love with a funky and sweet young male, but things go sour when a psychologist shows up.
Pinkvilla describes it as a “romantic tale that is close to reality.”
The film was released on Netflix on March 31.
4. Maaran
Dhanush has gained massive praise for his performance in this action-thriller written and directed by Karthick Naren. He plays a young man who bears witness to the revenge-killing of his journalist father for his brave and out-of-line reporting.
Tamil beauty Malavika Mohanan also holds a key role.
Not to be confused with his 2018 action-comedy Maari, the film displays a slow-burn, progressive and unique plot. Much of the film’s duration places a heavy focus onto Dhanush himself, so this is an absolute treat for fans of the skilled thespian such as myself.
Maaran is available on Disney+Hotstar.
