Table 23
Friendly Faces
Priding itself on providing a space where no one is a stranger is the premise behind the conception of Table 23, a rather quaint spot wedged in between popular nightspots off Jalan Mesui. This openness to welcoming everyone, the communal spirit, could be leftover ethos from what the venue was before, a backpacker hostel partially owned by them. To quote owner Sherlene Siew: “No one here is a stranger, even if they’re a tourist who comes in for the first time.”
Sporting a mainly western menu, favourite dishes include the beef cheek, lamb shank, and pan-seared salmon. But we noted that during lunch hours (yes, they do open that early), patrons prefer Table 23’s Asian lunch menu, possibly due to the quickness of preparing Asian food and their short lunch hours. There is a difference between their customer demographics during day and night, and they aren’t opposed to appealing to both.
Aside from being a pet friendly joint and having live bands on Fridays, Table 23 also has a unique upper floor establishment under the name Ah Fatt Tyre Shop and Bar. Using a Chinese workshop motif, the floor is decorated with old tyres, signboards, car jacks, oil canisters, and what have you to create a conceptual bar – a refreshing departure from the standard western bar template that we wish to see more of elsewhere. Currently, the venue is tinkering with different cocktail concoctions in line with the theme of the bar and also setting up a delivery service during lunch hours within KL. A friendly spot and a localised bar upstairs are exactly the panacea to Changkat’s tired touristy watering holes.
