Sunset By NEON: Upperground Pulls In 8,000 For High-Altitude Rave Experience

Thousands of electronic music fans descended on Resorts World Awana, Genting Highlands last Saturday (20 June) for Sunset By NEON: Upperground, a high-energy festival that delivered a night of immersive audio-visual spectacle.

Set against the cool mountain backdrop of Genting Highlands, the event featured an international lineup of electronic music heavyweights including ARTBAT, R3HAB, Chris Avantgarde, 7Skies, Plastik Funk, and Dora.

Throughout the evening, festival-goers were treated to more than just music. Massive digital visuals, pyrotechnic displays, fireworks, and synchronised drone performances transformed the venue into a full-scale sensory experience.

One of the night’s most anticipated performances came from Ukrainian techno duo ARTBAT, who closed out the festival in front of thousands of attendees. Their set featured fan favourites such as ‘Horizon’, ‘For A Feeling’, ‘Atlas’, and ‘Upperground’, accompanied by the duo’s signature cinematic visuals and explosive stage production.

A standout moment arrived during ‘Fight Machine’, where pulsating beats were paired with striking visuals depicting a pilot navigating a spacecraft using dual controls. The animated character moved in perfect sync with the music’s drops, and soon became one of the evening’s most memorable visual sequences.

Despite the late hours, the crowd’s energy showed no signs of slowing, with the festival continuing until around 3.30 a.m.

Located approximately 3,100 feet above sea level, Resorts World Awana’s cooler temperatures provided an ideal setting for an all-night outdoor rave.

While earlier reports suggested organisers were aiming to host around 6,000 attendees to create a more intimate festival experience, the event ultimately drew approximately 8,000 people.

Even with the larger turnout, the atmosphere remained energetic yet comfortable throughout the night.

The festival was held in collaboration with IQOS as part of the brand’s IQOS Curious X series.

Festival attendees had access to a dedicated experiential space showcasing the ILUMA i REMIX Limited Edition collection, alongside a giant Gachapon machine offering exclusive prizes.

IQOS users also enjoyed additional perks, including dedicated fast-track entry lanes and access to the elevated IQOS Zone, which offered enhanced views of the performances and production elements.

As the night drew to a close, a drone light show illuminated the Genting sky, providing a fitting finale to one of Malaysia’s biggest electronic music events of the year. With a crowd of 8,000, a stacked international lineup, and production to match, we’d say Sunset By NEON once again delivered exactly what fans came for.
