Form 1 Girl Humiliated In Front Of Assembly For Wearing ‘Wrong Shoes’
A Form 1 girl from Butterworth, Penang was allegedly punished by a senior teacher who made her kneel with her hands raised during a school assembly on Tuesday (1 Nov), for donning velcro-strapped shoes.
The Tasek Gelugor student said, “I was told to kneel on a tarred area with my hands up before the assembly. I told the teacher I could not afford a pair of shoes with laces as my father did not have money.”
Furthermore, the girl had a kayiru (holy string) on her right arm which was cut during the humiliating ordeal. After which, she was also instructed to remove her pottu (black dot) and sacred ash from her forehead.
The 13-year-old student who was too frightened to return to school eventually reported the incident to the Butterworth police. Radzi Ahmad, Butterworth’s Chief of Police, confirmed her report to be valid.
As of right now, the school has yet to comment on the incident.
