Static Defunc+: 2 Heads Are Always Better Than 1
You guys are releasing an EP with Monsoon, yeah? How did this cross border signing happen?
N I love Kuala Lumpur! Hahah! I was brought up there. Anyways, Monsoon Records offered us a great deal!
A Notion A did all the talking.
Oh wow, didn’t realise you were raised here! Do you think that techno as a genre doesn’t get enough appreciation? People seem to mistake techno with party people partying in goggles, various bits of shiny and neon PVC.
N That’s what she said… [cough]
A Personally it has been appreciated, I think techno has a more mainstream appeal recently than it has done for the past few years, there are more techno nights around now I believe. But I think in general, techno doesn’t really lend itself to radio play (locally), which is always going to be a big stumbling block in our scene here. I have not seen them for soooo long. Where are they now?!
“2 heads, 1 mind” it says on your Facebook page. You two really never butted heads over creative direction? Tell us what the group dynamics is like.
N No! I will never hurt him! Ahaha! Well, we do have our own thoughts but we never argued before. Maybe in the future, heh! I’m the architect, the man with ideas while Artihc is the engineer, the technical guru.
A It’s natural to have disagreements. At the end it’s all about having both ideas meet and achieve the goal. That’s how we learn.
Beyond the EP with Monsoon, what are you guys currently working on now?
N We are working on our album to be released on Monsoon Records too! I can’t wait for that!
A A lot of the projects are still in progress. More releases on talks. We do have some remix duties. Hopefully all our production is of par. Fingers crossed.
Who are you guys listening to now? Recommend us some good sh*t!
N John Creamer, Stephane K – Forget The World
DJ Bone – FAM (Create)
Joris Voorn – MPX309
A Puresque – Leitmotiv (Tresor)
Ben Sims – Smoke & Mirrors LP (Drumcode)
Aux 88 Presents Black Tokyo – Aux 88 Presents Black Tokyo (Puzzlebox Records)
On a final note, tell us what we can expect this 7 July.
A Having a night presented by Monsoon+ with the likes of Hebbo (Minimalaysia), Romel Johan and EJ Missy (theloveaffair), rest assure that there’s going to be some rave-inspired, melodic, minimal and four to the floor beats going on!
p.s. bring your dancing shoes…. and goggles.
Will do. Our techno experience won’t be complete without goggles!
Static Defunct is set to perform at Bedroom KL this Saturday 7 July. More info on the event here. Check out the techno duo at their Facebook page here.
