South Korean actor O Yeong-Su, popular for his role as “Player 001” in Squid Game, could face one year in prison.

The 79-year-old had allegedly groped and kissed a woman in his theatre troupe without consent in 2017.  In November 2022, he was indicted for sexual misconduct at the first trial, but the actor denied all charges at the time. Instead, he insisted he simply “held the woman’s hand to guide the way”.

Prosecutors are gunning for a one-year prison sentence, with the verdict slated to be announced on 15 March 2024.

Squid Game not affected, but another film might see delays

Fortunately, if Yeong-Su is put behind bars, it won’t affect the new season of Squid Game, which is confirmed to be releasing in late 2024. “Player 001” died in the first season. However, the actor’s other projects may see a delayed release, including the film, Big Family.

According to the film’s distributor, Lotte Entertainment, the actor will be edited out of all the scenes he filmed for the movie. Taking his place is veteran actor Lee Soon Jae. Of course, this requires a lot of time (and money), so we can’t expect Big Family to release on time.

Big Family was slated for a 2024 release. But at the time of writing, the new release date has not yet been confirmed.
