Southern Uprising: The Scene Down Under
Ireen Tan / Miss Ireen Handmade / 8, Jalan Dhoby
Adamant not to have an office job, the former web designer (trained at Informatics) started selling her own handiwork to make ends meet. Despite facing opposition from her family, she has managed to develop a successful art-based business all on her own as a mix media artist. Her custom-designed jewellery, bags, and all manner of accessories have been featured in magazines and used in shoots, among other things.
Azrafe Zaky / JOHO / 9 Jalan Skudai
Studied at Lim Kok Wing in early 2000, Azrafe Zaky (Zak) was the former lead singer of Komplot. After a decade in KL, he felt it was time to head back to JB to liven things up, which led him to teaming up with Yusri. He saw that JB lacked alternative yet relevant activities for youths as the establishment just plainly “do not get kids” these days. Promoting a sense of pride in Johor is his mission statement.
Yusri Bachok / JOHO / 9 Jalan Skudai
Studied graphic design in Politeknik JB, Yusri met Zak when Komplot wanted some design work done for them when he was with Bankit, a KL-based design collective. He had worked as a graphic designer in many companies before meeting and sharing the same ideas as Zak, whom then decided to setup Joho. Collectively their design ethos is a mix of minimalist with Johor culture.
