You’ve probably seen the 10-second viral video of a foreigner getting slapped by an immigration officer  and couldn’t help but feel confused as to what was going on. According to multiple media reports, it is still uncertain as to why the officer lost his cool, but it is certain that the officer has been suspended.

In case you missed out, the short clip shows an immigration officer hitting a foreigner on the head and forcing his hand onto a scanner, while continuously berating him. The victim, a Bangladeshi, was applying for the voluntary repatriation 3+1 programme at one of the counters about 9am today when the slapping took place. Here’s the video:

“We have since removed the officer from the front desk,” said Johor Immigration Department director Datuk Rohaizi Bahari.

He said that such behaviour would not be tolerated but did not specify what form of disciplinary action would be taken against the officer. Rohaizi added that the incident happened at about 9am Wednesday (May 30) at the immigration office in Wisma Persekutuan.

Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Mustafa Ali, the director-general of Immigration Department also issued a statement, saying the action had tarnished the image of Malaysia’s Immigration Department.

“We would consider suspending or firing the officer. Disciplinary actions will be based on the Disciplinary Regulation for Public Servants 2002,” he said.

It’s unsettling to think that Bangladeshis who come here to work in Malaysia, mainly because they’re in high demand due to their reputation of being the most honest and hardworking among foreign workers, are commonly given poor treatment by locals. This case is particularly special as someone had recorded it, otherwise it might have just gone unnoticed. We urge Malaysians to be more thoughtful towards people who are just trying to make ends meet.
