Shipping Container Used As Morgue For Covid-19 Fatalities Serves As Grim Reminder of Rising Cases
Covid-19 cases have been spiking recently together with the death toll. Yesterday (16 May), Malaysia recorded 3,780 new cases and 36 new deaths.
With that, hospitals like Hospital Sungai Buloh are running out of space to keep the bodies of those who have died from the virus.
To compensate for the time being, a special shipping container has been brought in preparation to house the bodies.
The announcement was made by the health ministry via Twitter.
The tweet reads, “The Forensics Department of Hospital Sungai Buloh has had to prepare a special container as an additional morgue for those who have passed away due to Covid-19. Today, six more deaths have been reported at the hospital. More than 80% of deaths were from Covid-19.”
According to the ministry, “More than 80% of Covid-19 deaths in the country involve the elderly and those with chronic illnesses or comorbidities [the simultaneous presence of two or more diseases or medical conditions in a patient]. Most were infected by family members.”
Selangor remains one of the worst-hit states with 18,564 local infections reported in the past two weeks.
