She & Him: Christmas Day

Whilst Christmas has probably not held claim to a particularly ‘hip’ image since JC and the Biblical days, sometimes all it takes is the endorsement of Hipster Royalty to make a commercial craze buzzworthy again.

And that’s exactly what’s happened with the release of indie princess Zooey Deschanel and musical other half M. Ward (collectively known as She & Him’s) new Christmas album, A Very She & Him Christmas. The first single off the album ‘Christmas Day’ will be released late December; which is apt timing to grant it an honourary place amongst your Christmas playlist.

If you ever happened to see the movie Elf, you would have caught some of Deschanel’s stunning carol renditions already. With her classic and polished vocals layering perfectly over Ward’s guitar riffs, the song really does capture Christmas in its traditional homely sense. Like a cheesy greeting card it is sure to evoke images of white Christmases, cozy fireplaces, and giant smiles plastered across the faces of your dearest family and friends.

Although a white Christmas may seem worlds away from us here in tropical Malaysia, don’t be deterred by the slight seasonal disadvantage. Christmas should be accessible to hipsters worldwide, and armed with this bubbly tune looped on your stereo, the rest of your mission is simple. Deck your abode with appropriate festive displays (don’t forget the mistletoe), crank that A/C and lovingly prepare a hearty meal.

The finishing touch? Coerce your friends into sporting matching oversize knitted sweaters adorned with kitsch Christmas motifs. And there you have it. Your very own hipster Christmas!
