A foul smell coming from a house in Taman Seri Bistari, Nibong Tebal, led to the discovery of a man’s body inside a sewage tank, with his hands and feet bound.

Police were called to the house after a neighbour reported the strong odour. The body is believed to have been inside the tank for at least two days. Penang police chief Dennis Lim confirmed the discovery.

The deceased, who was in his 50s, had previously been reported missing. Police also learnt that his nephew had lodged a report over several suspicious transactions involving the man’s bank account.

Among the transactions was a RM30,000 transfer to a grocery store in Sungai Bakap on Monday.

Police found that the shop owner was subsequently instructed to transfer the money to a bank account in Myanmar.

Seberang Perai Selatan police chief Norazmi Abd Ghapar said the case is being investigated as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, while police work to formally identify the deceased.

An autopsy will be carried out to determine the cause of death, with police urging the public not to speculate while investigations are ongoing.
