Sabahan ‘Iron Man’ Climbs Mount Kinabalu To Raise Funds For A Good Cause
The man in the iron mask usually jets away in the skies, but this Iron Man is on a different mission.
Cosplayer Yohan Charles Jayasuria took a challenge by wearing a three kilogramme Iron Man costume and climbed Mount Kinabalu, surprising climbers and guides alike who cross paths with him.
The 39-year-old cosplayer, who’s climbed the mountain more than 10 times, hiked through a 6.7 kilometre trail from Timpohon Gate to Panar Leban last Friday (4 July), according to Borneo Today.
“It took about six and a half hours to reach Laban Rata (Panar Laban) before continuing to the peak at around 2.30am,” Yohan told New Straits Times.
Although Yohan did not manage to reach the mountain’s peak due to bad weather and safety concerns, he said it’s a dream come true to climb up the mountain in an Iron Man costume, and something that’s an achievement for him personally.
It is cool to see an experienced hiker in a superhero suit, but the initiative called “Iron Man”, is actually a fundraiser to assist mountain guides who had been affected by the Movement Control Order due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project’s head, veterinarian Dr Randolf Plaza said it was a success as they have managed to raise funds, which was their main mission. He said the quest was supposed to take place at the end of June but was postponed due to unpleasant weather.
“We have successfully delivered food aid to 300 mountain guides registered under Persatuan Malim Gunung Sabah (Pemangkina) on Friday. We hope the aid provided could help ease their burden,” says Dr Randolf.
