What better way is there to commemorate culture than through dance?

From December 16 – 18 2022, Panggung Bandaraya KL will host a showcase of joint efforts by three of the nation’s most renowned dance groups, highlighting Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity and dance legacy.

Three of Malaysia’s renowned dance companies, Dua Space Dance Theatre, Sutra Foundation, and DiDance, present Rentak Bumi 2.0, an exhilarating multi-cultural dance festival combining contemporary, traditional, and modern dances. With performances by some of Malaysia’s top dancers, Rentak Bumi 2.0 will examine the country’s rich cultural diversity and dance legacy.

Sutra Foundation, Dua Space Dance Theatre, and DiDance presented six virtual dance performances under the title Rentak Bumi during the various Covid lockdowns last year. As a component of ArtsFAS, a project of Yayasan Hasanah, artistic directors Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, Zaridah Abdul Mallik, Anthony Meh, and Aman Yap produced these virtual presentations. The three well-known Malaysian dance companies’ online campaign, Rentak Bumi, was successful in raising awareness of the great diversity of Malaysian dance during the difficult pandemic phase on a national and worldwide level.

The three dance groups will once again coordinate their efforts to turn these dance videos into a captivating live show, Rentak Bumi 2.0, this year with the ongoing support of ArtsFAS 2022. Tan Eng Heng, an award-winning lighting designer, will make an effort to use his creative talents to help Rentak Bumi create the delicate moods needed to illuminate the fascinating pieces displayed at Rentak Bumi 2.0.

In an attempt to reach out to performing arts students and individuals who are interested, Rentak Bumi 2.0 will also hold a unique lecture-demonstration titled “Behind the Making of Rentak Bumi.” This unique lecture-demonstration given by the three artistic directors contains guidance about the three dance groups’ combined creative efforts behind the online staging of Rentak Bumi that resulted in Rentak Bumi 2.0. The lecture-demonstration session is slated on December 18, 2022, at 6 pm, right before the final show.

“On behalf of Sutra Foundation, Dua Space Dance Theatre, and DiDance, we welcome you to see the splendour of Malay, Chinese, and Indian dance flavours, encompassing traditional to contemporary dance during Rentak Bumi 2.0,” remarked Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, the founder and artistic director of Sutra Foundation.

“We also warmly invite performing arts students to the specially organised sharing session with the artistic directors who were the driving forces behind the creation of the dance pieces in Rentak Bumi.

“We must also express our deepest gratitude to Arts For All Seasons (ArtsFAS), a Yayasan Hasanah project to preserve and promote the arts, which was instrumental in the fulfillment of this occasion and allowed us to encourage a new generation of performers and visual artists. As we wrap up the year 2022, art aficionados and the Malaysian public as a whole shouldn’t miss this dancing spectacle,” he added.
