Take Two is a new series of EPs under SaturdaySelects that focuses on the creativity of budding artists – of both musical and visual arts. To the uninitiated, SaturdaySelects is a record label and collective devoted to fostering a strong music community both locally and worldwide, having had held events that champion Malaysian DJ-producers as well as international names from the Soulection crew and more.
For the first release of their Take Two series, the collective pairs KL-based producer and DJ Reddi Rocket with 417Y54 (Alisya Fairuz), who helms the art direction for its cover art. The debut EP series is produced, mixed, and mastered by Reddi Rocket himself, bumping existing tracks into a new outlook by giving them his own flavour. This collection takes you through four renditions and remixes of both old and latest hits — from 1980 Sukiyaki’s ‘A Taste of Honey’ to 2017 Daniel Caesar’s ‘Best Part’.
‘Sukiyaki Honey’ introduces us to the “Reddi Rocket sound,” with his signature oriental sounds and creative use of Drake’s ‘Free Smoke’ sample. It’s a fresh spin on something old but gold, and would act as a good opener to a Mura Masa show.
‘Best Part’ is an upbeat rendition of the original while still keeping the main body and pleasant vocals of Daniel Caesar and H.E.R in the spotlight. ‘Crew to Wes’ is a bouncy remix of Goldlink’s ‘Crew’, starting off with vocals and a light, summery guitar strumming in the back on lo-fi mode, which switches into crisp production as soon as the kick comes in.
‘Find Some Time’ is one of the shorter tracks on the EP, which follows well after ‘Crew to Wes’ as they share a similar vibe. Here, we can hear Reddi Rocket’s creativity flourish to close the EP on a memorable note.
Check out SaturdaySelects to keep up with their new EP series and music under their label, and don’t forget to show some love to Reddi Rocket!
