Rapid KL To Introduce Credit Card & E-Wallet Tap-In System

Soon, commuting around Kuala Lumpur could get a whole lot easier.

Prasarana has confirmed that an open payment system for Rapid KL’s trains and buses is currently in the final award stage, meaning passengers may soon be able to tap in and out using credit cards, debit cards, mobile wallets, and QR payments instead of relying solely on Touch ‘n Go cards or tokens.

For years, Rapid KL’s rail network has operated on a closed-loop fare collection system built around Touch ‘n Go, which has been in use since 1999. While the system has remained reliable, it was developed long before newer cashless technologies like Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and contactless bank cards became common.

Because of that, commuters today still need either a Touch ‘n Go card or a single-use token to access services like the LRT, MRT, Monorail, and BRT.

Although passengers can already use cash, debit cards, credit cards, and QR payments at station counters or ticket machines to buy tokens or reload Touch ‘n Go cards, direct tap-in and tap-out using those payment methods is still unavailable.

Bus services are even more limited at the moment.

Rapid KL buses currently only accept Touch ‘n Go cards and RapidKL cards, with cash payments having been phased out since 2019. QR payments are also not yet available for boarding buses, though Rapid KL On-Demand services already support app-based payments including DuitNow QR, debit cards, credit cards, and e-wallets.

That is set to change under Prasarana’s upcoming open payment rollout. The company says the future system will support credit and debit cards, QR payments, NFC transactions, and eventually mobile wallets across both rail and bus networks.

According to Prasarana, once the project is officially awarded, the rollout will happen in stages. Around 30 per cent of rail fare gates are expected to support open payments within the first 12 months, with full implementation targeted within 30 months.

Bus services across the Klang Valley are expected to complete the transition faster, with a full rollout projected within 15 months.

The upgrade is planned to cover the entire Rapid KL rail system, including the LRT, MRT, Monorail, and BRT, alongside Rapid KL buses, MRT feeder buses, and Rapid Penang services. QR payment support will also be included as part of the wider rollout.
