VIDEO: PUP Give Their New Single ‘Old Wounds’ The Video (Game) Treatment
Toronto’s favourite punks PUP have had a long and busy year since their excellent sophomore album, The Dream is Over, dropped last year. Even while touring non-stop since May 2016, they’ve debated the pros and cons of camping in Canada with VICE, put out a music video with old friend Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things fame, and even starred in the video game Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator (don’t get too excited, though – none of them are dateable characters). But they’re not done with 2017 yet – they’ve now released a new single, ‘Old Wounds’, accompanied by an immersive choose-your-own-adventure game masquerading as a music video.
According to PUP, the video for ‘Old Wounds’ involves “28 different ways to die, 16 aliens, 10+ beers, five Eastern Conference NBA playoff team references, and only four ways for PUP (the band) to survive” a wild night out, with you playing as their tour manager. Each of the four members have different levels of difficulty assigned to them, and storylines that start out completely separate but end up intertwining depending on the choices you make. There’s something for everyone in ‘Old Wounds’. You can shotgun beers and fight argumentative basketball fans with guitarist Steve Sladkowski, order pizza with lovable bassist Nestor Chumak, engage in a shootout against aliens with drummer Zack Mykula, or watch as frontman Stefan Babcock makes up for their non-dateable routes on Dream Daddy by literally (!) taking off all his clothes and jumping into a reservoir before getting eaten by a pixelated shark.
The choice is yours. All you have to do is press play. Oh, and before you tear your hair out an hour later – no, Stefan’s route isn’t actually impossible. Good luck!
