People don’t typically wonder how many teeth they actually have. After all, they’re just something we live with everyday. But for Prathab Muniandy, a casual family chat turned that mundane question into something rather special.

The 33-year-old Malaysian engineer now holds a Guinness World Records title for having the most teeth in a person’s mouth (male), totalling 42 teeth. Most adults stop at 32 teeth, which means the man has 10 extra teeth.

A curious discovery

You might think that Prathab discovered his extra teeth during a routine dental checkup or while brushing his teeth. But the discovery happened at a relaxed family tea-time back in 2021, when he casually mentioned he might have extra teeth growing.

“I first noticed this in 2021 during a family tea-time gathering, when I mentioned to my family that I seemed to have extra teeth growing,” he says. Curiosity quickly took over and the family decided to count all his teeth on the spot.

“We counted them together and found that I had 38 teeth at the time. A dental X-ray later showed that there were four more teeth that had yet to erupt. By early 2023, I realised that I had a total of 42 teeth. Fortunately, most of the teeth grew straight and without any complications.”

What’s more interesting is the fact that Prathab has two more teeth that haven’t surfaced yet, meaning his record-breaking mouth might still be breaking more records in the future.

Despite the extra teeth, life has carried on quite normally for the oil and gas engineer and father of one. Most people don’t even notice anything unusual about his smile until he points it out himself.

“People are usually very surprised and initially find it hard to believe, especially when they learn that I have 10 more teeth than the average person, who typically has 32 teeth,” Prathab explains.

You might be inclined to think that having 10 extra teeth might be difficult to deal with on a daily basis, but Prathab says it hasn’t caused any problems. He emphasised the importance of oral care, brushing twice a day and flossing regularly.

“I would like to acknowledge my supportive dentists, Dr Shovannia and Dr Arivinthaan, for going the extra mile in taking care of my oral hygiene and supporting me throughout this journey,” he says.

The women’s record belongs to Kalpana Balan of India, who has 38 teeth.
