Ever visited a cool restaurant abroad and wondered why we didn’t have a local outlet? Or seen one on TV and wished you could teleport all the way to Chicago for a burger? (looking at you, Shameless fans)

Well, Malaysia has had its fair share of popular Western F&B outlets trying their luck on local grounds. Some thrived, but others? Not so much. Here’s a list of some franchises that once graced our shores—only to pack up and leave:

1. Shakey’s Pizza (1978 – 2009)

Origin: USA
Why It Flopped: Couldn’t keep up with the pizza powerhouses—Pizza Hut and Domino’s dominated the market. Once a go-to spot, it faded into obscurity over the years. Its last known outlet was at Bukit Bintang.

2. White Castle (1980 – Early 1990s)

Origin: USA
Why It Flopped: Malaysians weren’t too keen on the tiny slider-style burgers, claiming they weren’t ‘satisfying’ enough. Heavy competition didn’t help either. Once located in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

3. Grandy’s (1990s)

Origin: USA
Why It Flopped: Weak management and low demand for Southern American-style food at the time led to its downfall.

4. Sizzler (1990s – Early 2000s)

Origin: USA
Why It Flopped: The steak and salad bar concept wasn’t a hit with Malaysians back then. Timing was just not in its favour.

5. Hartz Chicken Buffet (1990s – Early 2000s)

Origin: USA
Why It Flopped: A buffet-style chicken joint sounded great on paper, but Malaysians remained loyal to KFC. Interestingly, Hartz Chicken Buffet is still operating in Sarawak.

6. Wendy’s (2008 – 2019)

Origin: USA
Why It Flopped: Perhaps the most well-known flop on this list. Faced intense competition from McDonald’s and Burger King. There were also rumours of franchising issues that played a role in its downfall.

7. Papa John’s (2009 – 2015)

Origin: USA
Why It Flopped: Before you protest—yes, Papa John’s is back, but under a new franchise. The original attempt failed due to weak marketing and, once again, Pizza Hut and Domino’s proving too tough to beat.

8. Bulgogi Brothers (2012 – 2017)

Origin: South Korea
Why It Flopped: Premium Korean BBQ sounded promising, but Malaysians at the time found the pricing too exorbitant.

9. Tous les Jours (2013 – 2017)

Origin: South Korea

10. Tim Ho Wan (2014 – 2017)

Origin: Hong Kong
Why It Flopped: The Michelin-starred dim sum chain was highly anticipated, but steep prices meant it struggled to attract regular customers.
