Our weekly roundup of events to check out over the weekend isn’t only restricted to venues within the Valley — we love listing parties for our readers to have a good time at no matter how far away, we love them all equally. Speaking of The Cure references, check out the acoustic tribute session of the English rock band at Minut Init tonight. While unfortunately Ryan Hemsworth’s show in KL didn’t go as planned (we’re still in mourning), if you have the resources, definitely make a last-minute trip down to Singapore to catch his set at Moonbeats Warehouse Party. Then, wrap up Sunday at Hin Bus Depot Art Centre, Penang to cool down from this unbearable heat at their Skimboard Party.

Friday I’m In Love: The Cure Acoustic Tribute Session

The-Cure-Robert-Smith

Join IZTRU, Miyan PV & Collen, Acai & Tandang Bois, Robotwan & The Gilligans, Yobe, Alang, Mino & The Other Guy, and more for an entire night dedicated to the English rock band responsible for romanticising love in a way that no romantic movie or relationship ever could, unless if it were with Robert Smith on a Friday. Expect to hear covers of ‘Just Like Heaven’, ‘A Night Like This’, ‘Plainsong’, ‘Love Song’, and the titular track. The last of which is guaranteed to be a crowd-favourite.

You can catch the duo again this Friday at Pisco, along with residents Bunga and Mr. Backsounds, or as he may be more familiarly known as – one-half of HULKAS.

Ohrwurm Pres. Moodymanc (2020Vision/Tsuba, UK)

1157597_607444402659268_92529452_n

Having previously performed under the moniker Dubble D, Ohrwurm will welcome Danny Ward, now one of the noted DJ-producers in house who goes under the name Moodymanc. Ward started his career in the mid ’90s where he had worked with a number of known names such as electronic duo Fila Brazilia, hip hop weirdos The Pharcyde, and dance luminaries Rae & Christian. With a diverse past resume, a jazz background, and a collection of records from across the music spectrum, he is that rare DJ with an edge over his peers despite being lumped into a singular genre. Expect upcoming releases on bespoke label La Petite Morte with Cesar Merville, Javi Bora, and Gartenhaus, with a remix by Kevin Over. Supporting Moodymanc are Xes Xes Loveseat, Alam, and Nadia, with visuals a la ALT.IMG (TheManNamedUncle & Boris).

Acrylic Workshop

Though on the pricier side of a workshop, classes hosted by TH.Inc are worth their price as they’re guaranteed to be enjoyable and educational even if an attendee has no prior experience with the medium being used. The first 15 minutes of this workshop will start with a brief on what to expect throughout the class — breakfast and coffee are included —it will proceed to an hour long introduction of acrylic painting techniques, then it moves on to two and a half hours of sketching and learning to paint on canvas, paper, and wood. The class will end with a 15-minute discussion and lunch.

Poet Vs. Wild

unnamed-2

One of the most challenging performances to pull off is when the only props included are a microphone and a poem, but thankfully there are a few artists that have mastered the art of spoken word. For a span of 90 minutes, wordsmiths Amir Jahari, Lara Hassan, Jamal Raslan, Leaism, Jack Malik, Eyza Bahra, Surnia Fizul, and Asmaraloka will be pairing various genres of music with spoken word. It’s a known fact that creative minds harvest the most emotions — think of the magic that could happen when impassioned beings share a stage together.

Moonbeats Warehouse Party feat. Ryan Hemsworth, Slow Magic & More

Hemsworth-1

Singaporean gig organiser Moonbeats Asia has brought some of the best indie talents – such as Giraffage and Braids – to the little island that could. Naturally, the lineup for their very own warehouse party is killer. They’ve got Ryan Hemsworth and mysterious, mask-toting Slow Magic. Then there’s Londoner et aliae, whose dulcet Rose EP has been picked up by a number of music publications. Furthermore, the Singaporean acts should deliver stellar supporting performances as well, with ATTAGIRL!’s DuriO supplying some choons from the UK bass scene and team cake, who’ll drop some much less assaulting techno and house.

10703689_551044081692281_730377137357861654_n

RTB Plus One is back for a sophomore edition after the wildly successful – and riot-inducing – inaugural show featuring the dabbing and moshing of The Bat Cave and Krayziesoundz. Akhyla’s sole rapper (when VMPRMYTH himself isn’t rapping) N3MO, with Reddi Rocket in tow as backing DJ and Lost Fellas Creative‘s producer-rapper Dan Bam as his ‘plus one’, will imbue the almost six years old gig platform with some freshness, considering their relative newness to the hip hop scene.

Click 2 Klick (C2K) 1st Anniversary Party

source: Click 2 Klick

FunkayroL and Adam Khan’s collaborative project as Click 2 Klick began in 2015 – some one year later, after much hustling in the KL nightlife scene, they’ve since made something of a name for themselves as a formidable duo. After all, they’ve shared the same decks as the likes of Yousef, Sasha, and Dosem, just to name a few. This Saturday, head on over to Nagaba’s rooftop bar to experience the C2K experience for yourself, where their setlist traverses the genre spectrum of deep house and techno. Indonesian DJ Stefanya Morgan is set to open.

Want a preview of the night? Listen to their recent two-hour-long set below for a good idea of what it’d sound like:

Skimboard Party

image

Another way to live through the hellish heat we’re facing is to use the bright sunshine to our advantage. What better way to do that than to throw a pool party? Hin Bus Depot Art Centre wants to temporarily cure everyone’s dry spells, so they’re objective is to get everyone wet. There’ll be water slides and skimboards for all to use, however, it is encouraged that guests bring their own water or bubble guns, and an inflatable pool if you have one tucked away somewhere. No party is complete without music — the DJ lineup for the day include Josh Mosh, Re.dfne, and Synthication, whom we’d imagine plays tracks that are heavy on synths.
