New Thailand-Malaysia Border Crossing Set to Improve Travel and Trade

Thailand is set to open a new permanent border checkpoint with Malaysia on 11 July, following cabinet approval aimed at improving cross-border trade, tourism, investment, and logistics between the neighbouring countries.

The new Sadao checkpoint, situated between boundary markers 23/9 and 23/10, will replace the existing crossing and operate daily from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., according to a statement from the Thai government.

To support the transition, government agencies have been instructed to speed up the construction of connecting roads, ease traffic congestion around the checkpoint, and introduce shuttle services. Authorities in Thailand’s Songkhla province will oversee the project’s implementation and monitor its progress.

Government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek also said officials will work closely with businesses, logistics operators, and local communities.

Updated traffic routes, customs procedures, immigration processes, and other measures designed to make cross-border travel and trade more efficient will be considered.

The announcement comes ahead of Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s official visit to Malaysia on 9 and 10 July, where he is scheduled to meet Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

During the visit, both leaders are expected to endorse a joint statement outlining future cooperation on border development, regional connectivity, tackling transnational crime, and strengthening economic ties, with a particular focus on food and energy security.
