Due to the harsh reality of financial restrictions, the dream of continuing their education beyond secondary school for many children remains just that—a dream. But every so often, a beacon of hope arises in the form of a kind-hearted individual who recognises the potential in a child and is prepared to lend a helping hand.

One such pupil, Norasiah Jamil, was fortunate to have a teacher who went above and beyond to make sure she had the chance to advance in her academics. Norasiah was deeply moved by the memories of this remarkable act of charity and, via social media, conducted an earnest search for Cikgu Pak Lin Hau, her former chemistry teacher, who covered for her university registration fees all those years ago (36, to be exact).

Her Facebook post demonstrates her abiding desire to personally thank Cikgu Pak Lin Hau for her unselfish deed as well as her profound gratitude. With a plea for help from those who may know the whereabouts of the teacher or her husband, Norasiah’s search is a poignant reminder of the impact a single act of kindness can have on a person’s life.

She recalled how her teacher stepped in when she faced financial difficulties that put her ambitions to attend university in jeopardy. She used her own money and extra resources from the school’s Parent-Teacher Association to foot the bill for Nurasiah’s university registration fees into UTM in 1988. In addition to giving Nurasiah the means to complete her education, this act of selflessness gave her a sense of hope and drive that has remained with her for more than three decades.

Netizens were kept on the edge of their seats for a few days, awaiting updates from Nurasiah and offering her well-wishes. Thankfully, on Friday morning (March 24), she confirmed that her beloved teacher had been found and that they were working on fixing a date to meet.

Nurasiah was overcome with emotion and expressed her excitement at being able to thank someone who had made such an impact on her life in person. She considers how her teacher’s modest but profound act of kindness has remained with her over the years, and how it has played a significant role in assisting her in fulfilling her aspirations and leading a better life.
