If you thought samgyetang was just one bowl of ginseng chicken soup, MODU KLGCC is here to complicate that idea.
Following its first outlet at The Exchange TRX, Korean restaurant MODU has opened its second Malaysian location at KLGCC Mall, bringing a much bigger menu, a new smoked chicken offering, and a very different setting to the table.
The biggest draw is probably the sheer number of samgyetang options. There are 13 variations to work your way through, ranging from the more traditional Hanbang Samgyetang to richer options like Truffle and Black Garlic.
There are also two creations made specifically for the KLGCC outlet: Scorched Rice Samgyetang and Curry Laksa Samgyetang.
The latter is probably the one that catches your attention first. It takes the familiar Korean chicken soup and throws in the flavours of curry laksa, complete with taupok and bean sprouts.

It sounds like an unlikely pairing on paper, but the fragrant curry spices work surprisingly well with the slow-cooked chicken broth, giving the dish a distinctly local personality without completely losing its Korean roots.

The Scorched Rice Samgyetang takes a quieter approach. Crispy nurungji sits on top of the soup, adding a toasted, nutty flavour and a bit of texture to an otherwise soft and comforting bowl.

And then there’s the smoked chicken
MODU KLGCC also moves beyond samgyetang with its new smoked chicken, which is exclusive to this outlet.
The 650g Smoked Chicken comes in at RM78, with the chicken gently smoked before being finished by the kitchen. The smoking gives the meat a deeper flavour while keeping it juicy, making it a little more indulgent than the restaurant’s soup-heavy menu might suggest.

For those who don’t want to commit to just one bowl, the 2-Gather Sharing Set costs RM175 for two and includes two samgyetang flavours, a sharing dish, a teapot for two, and yakgwa, a traditional Korean honey pastry flavoured with ginger and cinnamon.
Beyond that, the menu branches out into handmade kalguksu, pancakes, noodles, rice balls, and smaller dishes including corn fries, tofu, chicken gizzard popcorn, and Korean chicken porridge.

The space is half the experience
The KLGCC location feels noticeably different from MODU’s TRX outlet.
Set inside a 5,500 sq ft rooftop pavilion, the restaurant overlooks the KLGCC golf course, with plenty of natural greenery surrounding the space. The interiors take cues from traditional Korean hanok houses, but without going completely old-school. Warm wood, lattice details, and lantern-style lighting give it a calm, contemporary feel.
There are around 100 seats, along with private VIP rooms and outdoor seating. At the centre of the restaurant, an open kitchen lets you watch the chefs put the dishes together, including the finishing touches on the smoked chicken.
It’s the sort of place where you can come in for a quick bowl of soup, but the setting makes it tempting to stay a little longer.

So, what exactly is in the bowl?
MODU’s samgyetang is built around whole organic, free-range chicken and a broth that is simmered for 12 hours. The menu includes everything from the straightforward Hanbang Samgyetang at RM52 to more elaborate versions such as Abalone Samgyetang at RM74 and Black Chicken & Octopus Samgyetang at RM76.
Some of the other options include:
- Truffle Samgyetang – RM72
- Mushroom Samgyetang – RM58
- Black Garlic Samgyetang – RM64
- Spicy Herbal Samgyetang – RM56
- Youthful Samgyetang – RM56
- Black Sesame Samgyetang – RM58
- Perilla Seed Samgyetang – RM58
- Black Chicken Samgyetang – RM64
There is also Kalguksu, or hand-cut Korean noodles, available in Hanbang, Spicy Herba, and Perilla Seed variations.
Everything on the menu uses halal-certified ingredients and follows MODU’s no pork, no lard, and no alcohol approach.

A second outlet that does its own thing
What makes MODU KLGCC interesting is that it doesn’t feel like a carbon copy of the TRX restaurant. The expanded menu gives regulars plenty of new combinations to try, while the Curry Laksa Samgyetang and smoked chicken take the restaurant somewhere slightly less expected.
For anyone who has always thought of samgyetang as a very specific kind of Korean comfort food, the KLGCC outlet makes a decent case for thinking beyond the classic bowl. You can keep things traditional with the Hanbang Samgyetang, go all in on the Truffle or Abalone versions, or take the more curious route with curry laksa and nurungji.
And perhaps that’s what makes the new location worth the trip. MODU isn’t trying to reinvent Korean food completely. It’s taking something familiar, playing around with it, and giving you a reason to come back and try it differently the next time.
Plus, set above the golf course with the kitchen open to view, MODU KLGCC makes a meal out of the whole thing rather than treating samgyetang as just another bowl of soup!
