11 Surprisingly Impressive Things Malaysia Is Number One At

Malaysia gets a lot of love for its food, islands, malls, and ability to turn literally any patch of pavement into a place to makan.

But beyond nasi lemak and KL traffic, we’re quietly very, very good at some pretty random things.

Like, did you know Malaysia is home to the world’s fastest cup stacker? Or that a surprisingly huge chunk of the world’s rubber gloves come from here?

From computer chips to cave chambers, para badminton to orangutans, here are some of the things Malaysia can actually brag about (other than being Indonesia’s annual open-burning victim).

1. We have the world’s fastest cup stacker

Competitive cup stacking is a thing, and Malaysia happens to be very good at it.

Malaysian speed stacker Chan Keng Ian holds the Guinness World Records title for the fastest individual Cycle Stack, completing it in just 4.753 seconds.

Four. Point. Seven. Five. Seconds. Meanwhile, most of us are still trying to separate two plastic cups that got stuck together…

2. Half the world’s rubber gloves are Malaysian

Malaysia is a global heavyweight when it comes to rubber gloves, and is the world’s largest exporter of them.

The country’s rubber glove industry supplies healthcare, manufacturing, food, and other industries around the world. So, somewhere out there, there is probably a Malaysian-made glove protecting someone from… something.

Not the most glamorous flex, but a pretty important one.

3. Penang is a big deal in the chip world

You might associate Penang with char kuey teow, but the island is also deeply embedded in the global semiconductor industry.

Malaysia accounts for around 13% of global semiconductor assembly, testing, and packaging, with Penang at the heart of much of the country’s electrical and electronics industry.

So while we’re arguing over which Penang hawker stall is the best, the island is quietly helping keep the world’s electronics running. Priorities!

4. We’re home to one of the biggest names in pewter

You probably know Royal Selangor, even if you’ve never really thought about what pewter actually is.

Founded in Kuala Lumpur in 1885, the Malaysian brand has grown into one of the world’s best-known names in pewter, with a global presence spanning cities from London to Hong Kong.

Not bad for a material that sounds like something you’d find in your grandmother’s cupboard.

5. Malaysia is the world’s top Muslim-friendly travel destination

For Muslim travellers, Malaysia has been doing something very right.

The country has held the top spot in the Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index for 11 consecutive years, thanks to its combination of halal food, prayer facilities, Muslim-friendly accommodation, and overall accessibility.

6. We’re a para badminton powerhouse

Malaysia has produced some seriously formidable para badminton players, competing at the highest level internationally and bringing home major titles.

The country’s para badminton programme has become one of its strongest sporting success stories, with Malaysian athletes consistently appearing among the world’s best.

7. The world’s largest underground cave chamber is in Sarawak

Deep inside Gunung Mulu National Park sits the Sarawak Chamber, the world’s largest known underground cave chamber.

It measures around 600 metres long, 415 metres wide, and 80 metres high. To put that into perspective, it is so massive that it could reportedly fit eight Boeing 747s inside.

And you thought your Airbnb living room was spacious…

8. Malaysia is a major medical tourism destination

People aren’t just flying into Malaysia for a holiday. They’re coming here for healthcare, too.

Malaysia has built a strong reputation as a medical tourism hub, attracting international patients with its internationally recognised healthcare facilities, comparatively affordable treatment, and accessibility.

So yes, you can come here for the beaches, stay for the food, and apparently get your medical treatment sorted while you’re at it.

9. A bizarre new fungus was found in Borneo

As if Borneo’s biodiversity wasn’t already impressive enough, the island has also been the site of some seriously weird scientific discoveries.

Among them is a newly identified horned fungus, also referred to as a ‘hyperparasite’, adding another strange and wonderfully specific species to Borneo’s already massive catalogue of wildlife and plant life.

The fungus belongs to the genus Pleurocordyceps and targets ants already infected by Ophiocordyceps, or “zombie fungus”, which manipulates the infected insect’s nervous system and makes it behave erratically before killing it and bursting from its carcass.

Doesn’t sound like much of a fun-gi…

10. The world’s first orangutan rehabilitation centre is in Sabah

Sabah is home to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, established in 1964 as the world’s first institution dedicated to rehabilitating orangutans.

The centre takes in orphaned and injured orangutans, helping them develop the skills they need to eventually return to the wild.

Also one of those places that makes you remember Malaysia is sitting on some seriously incredible biodiversity.

11. We’re absolutely obsessed with QR payments

Malaysia has gone all in on QR payments.

DuitNow QR alone recorded three billion transactions in 2025, with almost three million registered touchpoints across the country by the end of the year.

And honestly, that tracks. From your favourite mamak to the random pasar malam stall selling one suspiciously good-looking drink, there is probably a QR code waiting for you.

The TikTok post claims Malaysia is second only to China for QR payments, although that depends on exactly how the ranking is measured. What isn’t really up for debate is that Malaysians have embraced the QR code with frightening enthusiasm.
