The organisers of the Lawan rally, Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) have issued a statement regarding the increase of prices while wages have stayed stagnant.

It said, “We urge the government led by (Prime Minister) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to take urgent measures to save the people by lowering the price of food items. SSR would not hesitate to once again mobilise the people and take to the streets as a manifestation of our freedom of expression in parallel with the basic principles of democracy.”

The looming possibility of SSR organising another protest should not be dismissed. SSR has previously organised three protests in the country from July to August due to the governments mismanagement of the pandemic.

These protests were attended by more than 2,000 citizens in Dataran Merdeka and demanded the resignation of former prime minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin as well as financial assistance and the reopening of parliamentary proceedings.

SSR has voiced that ordinary people have been deeply effected by political and economic unrests exacerbated by the on-going pandemic. They claim the political elite have been evading their duty to the people of this country. In their statement, SSR is quoted saying,

“People have lost their jobs, children are facing difficulties with distant learning, the Covid-19 infectivity rate has not decreased and families are still separated, yet politicians are busy distributing properties and creating positions among themselves.”

Current prime minister Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob issued a statement on the 1st of December citing accumulated costs of various supply chain levels for the reason of price hikes of essential goods.
