While mechanical keyboards have been around for decades, they only gained mass appeal during the COVID-19 pandemic, when everyone was stuck at home under lockdown.

The need to spruce up one’s work-from-home setup called for the addition of mechanical keyboards to liven up the work experience. This writer fell into a deep mechanical keyboard rabbit hole at the time too.

But if there’s one gripe many people have with them, it’s that they’re heavy and cumbersome to bring around, especially now that we’re all back in the office again. That’s where Keychron comes in with the K3 Max wireless mechanical keyboard.

Built for the modern multi-tasker

The Keychron K3 Max is a slim wireless mechanical keyboard that’s designed to move with you. It retains its slim design thanks to its low-profile thickness, which is 31% slimmer than conventional mechanical keyboards.

If you happen to be someone who’s always multi-tasking, the K3 Max is capable of connecting to up to three different devices at any given time. It effortlessly switches between them, whether it’s a computer, tablet, or a smartphone, the K3 Max will make all your devices feel interconnected.

But of course, one of the main reasons you get a mechanical keyboard is the enhanced typing feel, thanks to its mechanical switches. Each keystroke is comfortably cushioned with minimal sound—perfect if you share your workspace with someone else and don’t want to bother them with the clicking and clacking of your keyboard.

An added feature of the K3 Max is its hotswap capability, allowing you to customise your keyboard switches to suit your sound and feel preferences. This writer personally prefers linear switches for their smooth, light actuation and sometimes slightly clacky sound signature.

Despite being super portable, the Keychron K3 Max is still pretty ergonomic and won’t strain your hands after extended use. But then again, this also depends on the type of switch you get.

If you want a more tactile feel, we recommend brown switches. If you’re like me, and want something with a softer feel, go for red switches. These are usually the quieter option too. But if you want to be anti-social and you truly don’t give a crap about the people in your surroundings, go for clicky blue switches.

The Keychron K3 Max also features RGB backlighting, if you’re into that sort of thing. (source: Keychron)

The feature that makes the Keychron K3 Max a more compelling option compared to other low-profile mechanical keyboards is the ability to customise various functions on the keys themselves.

Whether you want to dabble in remapping, creating macros, or assigning shortcuts, the Keychron Launcher Web Configurator will let you do all that and more. It’s a free web app that you can access any time. This is also where you can get firmware updates if and when they’re released.
