This Hilarious Deepavali Ad Shows That Love Speaks In Different Ways

Deepavali is just around the corner, and with the festival of lights comes family gatherings, lots of good food, and of course, open houses. But like any social gathering, you’re bound to come across a relative who says something you might not like, no matter how well-intentioned.

In the latest Deepavali ad by Julies Biscuits, we see this happen first-hand with an adult niece and her aunt. What ensues is a hilarious Wild West “duel” of words, carefully orchestrated so that no one says or does anything that might offend the other.

And so it begins

Saralah arrives at an open house, where her aunt Dhana watches closely as she greets other relatives and friends. They make eye contact, and Dhana puts on a wide smile, hoping to ease any tension.

Thinking her aunt is up to something, Saralah involuntarily rolls her eyes in frustration, panicking as she realises she did it IRL. But Dhana is determined to be a “cool aunt” this year, making sure not to nag or say anything that might offend her niece.

Hoping to distract her aunt, Saralah decides to introduce her boyfriend. But here’s the thing, Dhana isn’t sure what his name is, having recalled “seeing” him last year. She makes a couple of guesses in her head, including Vijay, Ravi, and Rangan, before settling on Kesavan.

As she goes in for a handshake, she’s spared from any embarrassment when the boyfriend cuts her off and introduces himself as Jiven. It turns out, Jiven is Saralah’s new boyfriend, something Dhana refrains from pointing out because, again, she’s a cool aunt.

Now that formal introductions have been made, Saralah quietly wonders why her aunt hasn’t asked that one question… “When are you getting married?” Dhana probably wants to ask, but she’s a “cool aunt”, in case you’ve forgotten.

But things nearly reach a melting point when Jiven almost refers to Saralah as “Sara” instead of using her full Tamil name. This is quickly corrected with a not-so-subtle nudge, courtesy of Saralah of course.

Before things can escalate, grandma interrupts them with her own dose of brutal honesty and rough humour, defusing the tension altogether.

It all ends with the family sitting together, enjoying some Julies Biscuits and watching the old west duel happening on TV. It goes to show that people express love in different ways, even if they don’t necessarily come off as affectionate.
