1. Have Social Media Presence

Now this is the most important thing you need because social media serves as the platform for you to grow and connect with your audience. You need to have at least one or two social media accounts as your main platforms. Think of them as your stage & where you’ll be performing to the world!

As you grow, so do your audiences on these platforms so don’t be discouraged if you start out with just your friends and family as followers.

2. Set up a dedicated space for your work and make sure it’s comfortable

Be it your bedroom or living room, set up a place where you can feel both comfortable and creative at the same time. You’d need a place where no one can bother you, so you can keep that creative energy going. You might even need some sound-proofing foam if your housemates or family are a noisy bunch. Get the flame-retardant kind if you plan on using heavy studio lighting, cooking, or doing anything with fire or flammables (we’re looking at you, chemistry enthusiasts/mad scientists).

And another pro tip: you definitely wouldn’t want to be showcasing a video where your dirty laundry’s in the background so clean up before a shoot.

3. Invest in Good Lighting

Social media users are attracted to visuals that stand out amongst the clutter, therefore, good lighting is a must to enhance the quality of your videos and photos.

Good lighting can make you stand out more especially in terms of the quality photos you’ll be using as thumbnails, and it helps you maintain your audience’s visual attention.

4. Be Yourself

The most important thing in creating content is determining what kind of content you want to create and what you can offer to the world, be it sharing your unique food recipes or creating insanely gorgeous makeup looks.

It should also be something you’re passionate about and don’t mind doing for the rest of your life. As a note of caution, in the long-run you might solely be known for what you’re doing and not for who you are as a person. So make sure you’re happy with the label that will be associated with you.

Stick to something you have deep knowledge of or you’re comfortable with because you will sound genuine. Your audience can pick up your insincerity if you’re not 100% into your own content.

5. Get a Smartphone or Camera and a Laptop That Can Edit Videos

You need to showcase yourself on social media, be it YouTube, Instagram or TikTok, so you’ll definitely need a good camera or smartphone.

Although you can make simple video edits on your smartphone, a laptop with a professional editing application will enable you to make higher quality videos, add more special effects/filters and manipulate or fix audio or footage that might not have been captured well during your shoot, amongst other things.
