Categorising Iman Omari with The Weeknd and Frank Ocean would be wrongheaded, sure he’s using the same modus operandi (free album-quality releases online), but his brand of r’n’b is more akin to Bilal, had he joined Brainfeeder. Hailing from LA, Low End Theory’s home state, Iman’s recent release Energy is more in debt to the beat scene than his tumblr’n’b peers.
Completely produced and written by himself, Iman channels every bit of his influences here from Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock to Dilla, creating a synthy space trip worthy of your hard earned bucks. Fortunately he’s letting us have the record free, which ain’t something we could say about run-of-the-mill r’n’b that’s populating the airwaves.
