If Malaysian Leaders Were Stylish Hipsters

Not only do hipsters seem to drink copious amounts of coffee, now they’re leading Malaysia? Well truth be told, to be a true hipster – you need to dress like one. In case you didn’t realise, fashion has permeated the Malaysian political scene in the aftermath of GE 14. Now we all know about Birkin and Bata.

While every other Malaysian millennial was busy making memes for GE14, Instagram user Aizat Paharodzie took it a step further with his colourful designs depicting members of the Malaysian Cabinet, dressed to the nines in complete hipster garb.

He took on six of Malaysia’s new leaders in his ‘Minihipsters’ series (geddit? minister-hipsters?) including Defence Minister Mat Sabu, Deputy Prime Minister and Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, and Pakatan Harapan de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

When JUICE asked Aizat through email what sparked his idea, he said that he was inspired by Amit Shimoni’s artwork. In celebrating the new government, he explored the concept of dressing them up as something that would be cool to see.
